Academic Law Library Directors’ Law School Courses
Compiled by Ann Puckett, University of Georgia, Updated May 7, 2004
This list had its genesis in an online discussion of ABA standards for law libraries and law librarians. The question I posed was:
Most of the comments that address teaching have focused on teaching legal research and writing. A good many of us teach other, so-called "substantive" courses (as if research and writing were insubstantial!) I know colleagues who teach copyright and international law courses. I teach disability law. I'd like to know what other courses the rest of you teach. As for me, teaching the disability law course has been extremely rewarding these last six years, and I wouldn't give it up for anything. I'm now casting around for a second seminar topic to propose for the spring semester next year. I feel my teaching a regular course gives me an empathy for and equality with other faculty members that I never had when I taught research and writing.
I received email replies from 28 colleagues, many with lengthy and insightful comments. I have included some of those comments in the endnotes. Many of the comments reflect replies not only to my query, but to a follow-up query by James Milles:
I'd be interested in hearing about how some of you got into teaching the substantive courses you do. Did you have an interest in the area you teach before becoming a librarian, or did you develop an interest afterwards? Do you have practice experience in that area? Were you expected by the other faculty or the dean to teach substantive courses, or were they resistant to your teaching? When did you start your teaching--pre- or post-tenure? Do you publish in your substantive area? How do you handle teaching on top of your other responsibilities? Do you have an associate librarian to help carry the administrative load?
After compiling the information that arrived by email, I became intrigued enough with the question to delve further into the matter. I checked the AALS Directory entries for the library directors who had not responded by email. The directory entry lists subjects taught by each professor, with the current year’s subject list in italics. Therefore, I was able to determine whether to place that director’s name in the “Past” or “Present” section of the list. Of course, there is no listing for “Future” teaching plans in the Directory, so the few subjects that have a “Future” listing were entirely a result of email correspondence with directors. A second caveat is that the AALS Directory entry is not necessarily complete. My own entry lists only Disability Law, although I taught Legal Research and Writing in my prior job. I suspect, but have not confirmed, the AALS entry reflects only the duties in one’s present position rather than one’s entire career.
It was a challenge to decide how to distill the information in a meaningful way. I finally hit upon the idea of using the list of subjects from the AALS Directory of Law Teachers 2003-2004. The Directory lists 88 subjects; law librarians teach or have taught 48 of those subjects, plus six additional subjects (represented in Italics in the list) that did not fit neatly into the Directory’s subject list. In many cases, librarians listed subjects they had taught in the past as well as current subjects, and, in a few cases, plans for future courses. Accordingly, each subject is subdivided into Past, Present and/or Future as appropriate to that subject.
In each entry I have provided the full name of the librarian and her/his academic affiliation. If the course taught is identical to the subject (e.g., Torts), nothing else is added to the entry. However, if the course taught is titled differently from the subject (e.g., Domestic Relations instead of Family Law) I have added the title of the course after the librarian’s entry. In some cases, I had to make a guess about course content. AALS doesn’t provide much in the way of scope notes for the subjects listed. For instance, I put Energy Law under Oil and Gas, but it might be better placed in Natural Resources. If you find that a course you teach would fit better under another subject, please let me know. I had trouble even figuring out where my own course fits in the AALS scheme, but finally found my name listed under Social Legislation.
I welcome comments about the usefulness of the format chosen, as well as additions and corrections to the list. If there is sufficient interest, I will update this report from time to time.
