Professional Biographical Information:
Stephen
James Harper became an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia
School of Law in 1998 and teaches in the area of trial practice.
He is presently director of programs at the Institute of Continuing
Legal Education in Georgia.
A retired U.S. Army colonel, Harper brings with him
extensive trial litigation experience he gained by participating in
over 1,000 criminal trials as prosecutor, defense counsel and
judge. He was the senior and managing partner for several large
military law offices and has taught constitutional law at West
Point. In addition, he has served as an adjunct professor at the
University of Maryland and Troy State University.
He is admitted to practice as attorney and counselor
before the U.S. Supreme Court. He is also a member of the
Association of Continuing Legal Education Administrators and the
American, Georgia and Alabama bar associations
Harper received his Juris Doctor from the University of
Alabama in 1974 and his bachelor’s degree from the United States
Military Academy in 1968. He also completed the Graduate Law
Program at the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s School, University of
Virginia, in 1978.
His wife of over 30 years is Sherry Garrett Harper. They
have two children, Rachel Harper Fox, a publicist for the TV news show
Extra, and James Garrett Harper, M.D., a surgical resident at the
Medical College of Georgia.
