Campus and Community Life
The entire University of Georgia campus has been designated as an arboreturn, and law students study in the most beautiful and historic secion - North Campus.  Here, century-old oak trees shade buildings that date from the early 1800s to modern times.  Georgia Law's facilities sit on a quadrangle beside UGA's main library and include:

  • Harold Hirsch Hall, the law school's main building, dedicated in 1932 and distinguished by its cupola, upon which are perched the scales of justice;
  • the Alexander Campbell King Law Library, constructed in 1967 and refurbished in 2003;
  • the J. Alton Hosch Law Library Annex, built in 1981; and
  • Dean Rusk Hall, opened in 1996.
The law school complex offers the utmost convenience to students:  classrooms, courtrooms, auditoriums, seminar rooms, computer labs, student lounges, message boxes, and faculty and administrative offices in one central location.

The Best of Both Worlds
Students at Georgia Law enjoy the best of both worlds - the fun and excitement of a thriving college town and the nearby professional opportunities of the southeast's major metropolis.

The Classic City
The city of Athens, with a population of just over 100,000, offers small-town charm and comfort combined with a progressive environment. The Classic City, as it is known, is a the legal and commercial center for Northeast Georgia, and cultural, intellectual, and recreational opportunities abound.  Home to the B-52's, R.E.M. and Widespread Panic, Athens was named the "Best College Music Town in the Country" by Rolling Stone magazine in 2003.  It was also ranked a "Top Arts Destination" in 2006 by AmericanStyle magazine and chosen as one of the "Fifty Best Places to Live" by Men's Journal in 2005.

Entertainment offerings and facilities rival those of much larger cities, and the events are affordable. The University of Georgia has its own performing arts center, and the its impeccable acoustics have attracted such world-class talent as opera diva Jessye Norman, the Canadian Brass, violinist Midori, the Vienna Boys Choir, the Shanghai Ballet, the King's Singers and the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra. The Performing and Visual Arts Complex also features the Georgia Museum of Art, the state's official art museum.  At the Classic Center in downtown Athens, you can enjoy tours of Broadway shows, operas, ballets or concerts by performers such as Travis Tritt, Green Day, Ben Harper, Willie Nelson, Harry Connick Jr. and Lauryn Hill.
Sports fans will be in seventh heaven in Athens which was voted Football photothe nation's Second Best College Town in 2003 by Sports Illustrated.  UGA has won eight NCAA championships in the last five years in addition to capturing the 2005 and  2002 Southeastern Conference football titles.  The university's recent national title holders are: men's golf (2005), men's tennis (2007),  women's swimming and diving (2005), women's gymnastics (2007, 2006 and 2005) and women's equestrian (2004 and 2003).  In addition, the men's tennis team won both the 2007 and 2006 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship, and the women's tennis team captured the title at the 2002 indoor tournament.  Also UGA's Diamond Dogs reached the college World Series in 2006 and 2004.   The school's well-rounded athletic program usually finishes near the top  for the prestigious national Sports Academy Directors' Cup, which is awarded for overall athletic excellence. Competing in the Southeastern Conference, UGA fields teams in more than 20 competitive sports and student tickets are available for all of them.

Many law students enjoy participating in the law school's intramural flag football, basketball and softball teams. Avid runners and cyclists will find a veritable paradise, and those who just need to get away from it all can enjoy leisurely strolls along the nature trails of the State Botanical Garden, located near the university's campus.

Downtown Athens photoUGA law students also have full access to the Bernard B. and Eugenia A. Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities, an immense facility that includes three pools, five gymnasia, 10 racquetball courts, two squash courts, sophisticated weight equipment, a jogging/running track, and a climbing wall. It has just been designated the best facility of its kind by Sport Illustrated twice.

For the outdoor enthusiast, hiking, boating, white-water rafting and skiing excursions to the North Georgia mountains are only a few hours away, and the sunny beaches of Georgia's coast are merely a half-day's drive.  Athens' climate is pleasant, with an average annual temperature of 62 degrees; the high averages 72 degrees, and the low averages 51 degress.

On the eclectic streets downtown, you'll find an assortment of excellent restaurants - from quaint coffee houses and Southern homestyle establishments to international cuisine, all at prices students can afford.

Athens' architecture is also an appealing mix of styles, ranging from historic Greek revival mansions and Victorian neighborhoods to the most modern of buildings and developments.  Law students have a variety of attractive, convenient and affordable housing options from which to choose.  While most opt to rent off-campus apartments, duplexes or houses, several students live in university residence halls and family housing units.

In the late spring, the law school's Office of Admissions sends detailed information to accepted students to assist them in their search for off-campus housing and roommates.

Atlanta
Atlanta skyline photoIn survey after survey, Atlanta consistently rates as one of the nation's most desirable places to live and work. The Georgia capital is home to the world headquarter of the Coca-Cola Company, UPS, Delta Air Lines, and the offices of several Fortune 500 companies as well as many state and regional, and national government and non-profit organization offices.

Arts, entertainment, and sports flourish in the city. If the High Museum of Art, Atlanta Ballet, and Atlanta Symphony do not suit your tastes, try Atlanta's professional sports teams - the 1999 National League and 1995 World Series Champion Braves (baseball), Hawks (basketball), Falcons (football),  Silverbacks (soccer),  Thrashers (hockey) and the 2005 National Conference Champion Georgia Force (arena football).

"I fell in love with the University of Georgia when I first walked onto campus.  There are so many fun, affordable things to do in Athens.  As a student, I enjoyed listening to jazz downtown, seeing the exhibits at the Georgia Museum of Art, playing intramural sports and working out at the Ramsey Center a couple of times a week.  I felt right at home."
