Ann Puckett, Director of the Law Library and Professor of Law
Professor Puckett to Retire
The
Law Library faculty and staff congratulate Ann Puckett, Professor of
Law and Director of the Law Library, on a distinguished career in law
librarianship. Professor Puckett will retire at the end of June after
16 years at Georgia Law.
During her successful career, Professor Puckett has been a national
leader in law library management, a mentor to fellow librarians, and an
advocate regarding social issues relevant to the profession. Among her
many accomplishments, Professor Puckett served as a member of the
executive board of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL)
from 1993 to 1996. At her initiative, the AALL
Contemporary Social Problems section (now Social Responsibility
section), established standing committees on Service to Institution
Residents and Lesbian and Gay Issues. In addition, she was instrumental in establishing
AALL's Mentor Project which provides a venue for interaction between
experienced law librarians and those new to the profession.
In 2009, Professor Puckett's peers recognized her service to the
profession, including a legacy of activism, by honoring her with the
prestigious AALL Marian Gallagher Gould Distinguished Service Award.
Nancy Johnson, Associate Dean for Library and Information Services and
Professor of Law at Georgia State University College of Law, stated in
her nominating letter that Professor Puckett "has relentlessly focused
her attention on criticial social issues that affect the profession and
the members of the profession."
In addition to her responsibilities within the Law Library, Professor
Puckett has taught a seminar course on law and disability for more than
ten years. She serves on the governing board of Georgia Options in Community Living,
and she helped research the briefs for the plaintiffs and amici in
Olmstead v. L.C., 527 U.S. 581 (1999), in which the U.S. Supreme Court
determined that mentally disabled persons are entitled to treatment in
the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs. For more about

Professor
Puckett earned both her Juris Doctor and Master's in Library
Science degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Before coming to UGA, she worked in the law libraries at the University
of Kansas, Southern Illinois University, and Northwestern University,
and she served as the director of the law library and professor of law
at South
Texas College of Law immediately prior to her service at UGA.
This tribute is a bittersweet one for the Law Library. We will miss
"AP" tremendously, both professionally and personally. On the other
hand, we take delight in knowing that she and her husband, Tom Wilson,
will enjoy traveling and also spending more time with their dogs, Augie
and Carson.
Extended hours:
The Law Library enters its period of extended
hours for exams beginning Friday, April 16. This means we will be open until 2a.m. every day until May 11.
Furlough:
Although most of the university will close on Friday, April 30 as part
of the furlough plan, the Law Library will
be open this day from 8am to 2am. Please note that this opening time is one hour later than our usual Friday opening time.
With the beginning of the exam period, the demand for
books in our reserve collection will also increase. To
impress upon students the importance of sharing these limited
resources, fines for overdues also substantially increase.
During exams, overdue reserve materials are assessed $5.00 for the first
hour (or part thereof), and $10.00 every hour thereafter.
Please don't let time slip away and incur a hefty charge! If no one has
asked for material, and your time has expired, you can re-check out the
books for another 2-hour period. Also, if you are here at closing,
reserve books can be checked out overnight, to be returned first thing
in the morning.

Our final program of the semester is designed to provide practical information
about using Atlanta law libraries. This session will be useful for those who will be working, interning or studying
in the Atlanta area over the summer or permanently.

This month's Law Dawg is Saki, a 5 year old Japanese Chin who resides with 3L Marie Greene.
Sources tell us that Saki loves napping, cuddling, eating, and taking
long walks. Her favorite tv show is Meerkat Manor, and her favorite
food is lamb chops.
