Improved Microform Reader
New
Microform Scanner
The
American Heritage Dictionary defines microforms as “an arrangement of
images reduced in size, as on microfilm or microfiche.” Like many large
libraries we have a significant number of titles on rolls of film and
fiche cards. Back in the 20th century these were the preferred methods
for long term retention of print materials. What any researcher knows
is that using them is a pain. The quality of the images are poor, you
can never get a whole page on the screen, printing is slow, and there
is no opportunity to digitize and email documents.
Your Law Library has changed that. We recently installed a ScanPro
microform scanner. The software allows users to scan and save documents
in multiple formats including PDF. The documents can then be saved to a
thumb drive, attached to an email message, or sent to the networked
printer. We have also purchased a larger monitor that allows viewing of
full newspaper pages. The scanner station is located in the copy room.
Using microforms will never be fun but our new equipment will make it
more convenient and more 21st century.
Printing Price Increase
On
September 19, photocopy prices will increase to 10 cents per page.
Printing prices will increase to 6 cents per page. We regret this
price increase, but unfortunately Bulldog Bucks is substantially
increasing their fees for administering our photocopy and printing
services.
Lunch-n-Learns
Believe it or not, we
are already half way through the Fall Semester Lunch and Learn Series.
Our first two offerings, "Law Library 101" and "Using RSS Feeds to
Become the Center of the Information Universe", were each a rousing
success with SRO crowds and high enthusiasm. Don't despair if you
missed those presentations. You still have two opportunities to enjoy
lunch on the library and learn about a research topic that will aid
your study and improve your prospects.
Join us Friday, September 26, at 12:30, as Associate Director for
Information Technology Carol Watson presents "Better Know a Resource:
An Overview of Law Library Electronic Resources (with apologies to the
Colbert Report)". She will share details on some of our lesser
known databases. You'll never again have to give up in despair after
discovering that neither Lexis nor Westlaw have the article or
commentary that you need, because you will know exactly where to look
for the precise information you need.
Later in the semester, Special Collections Librarian Sharon Bradley
will present our last offering of 2008.
New Feature: Law Dawgs
All
members of the Law School Community (students, faculty and staff) are
invited to submit a photo for possible selection as the Law Dawg of the
Month in upcoming issues of Amicus Briefs. The featured entry
for each issue will be selected at random from all entries received by
the issue's deadline. Please note that honorary Law Dawgs (i.e.
those of the feline, equine, porcine, etc. persuasion) are eligible as
well.
The newsletter editor, Anne Burnett, will send out an email well in
advance of the deadline for each issue to solicit entries. Please feel
free to submit your photo at any time, however, to aburnett@uga.edu. Make sure to let
me know your pet's name as well.
