Call for Papers: 2014 Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance: Networks in Global Governance

IBEI (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals) and ESADEgeo (ESADE Business School’s Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics) are organizing the second edition of the Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance, an international workshop to discuss the institutional design of global governance, on 9 & 10 January 2014. The workshop will focus on networks in global governance. The aim is to examine the potential and limitations of network approaches, as well as the challenges that networked governance at the global level can pose in terms of effectiveness, accountability and democracy. Confirmed keynote speakers include Deborah Avant (University of Denver), Miles E. Kahler (University of California San Diego) and Magnus Thor Torfasson (Harvard Business School) as well as Narcís Serra (former Spanish Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister) and Javier Solana (former NATO Secretary General and EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy). Northeastern University School of Law hosts Legal Scholarship 4.0 March 13-14, 2014. Papers are invited from junior faculty (i.e., those who have spent 7 years or fewer as a full-time law professor). The conference will explore the future of legal scholarship, through conversations among prominent legal scholars.

Break-out works-in-progress sessions will include a comment on each paper by senior faculty, and discussion by fellow panelists and conference participants. Conversations will continue throughout the conference at breakfast and lunch (provided), as well as during the speakers’ dinner.

Deadline: October 1, 2013. Interested junior faculty members are invited to submit an abstract (not to exceed 500 words) to Rick Doyon, r.doyon[@]neu.edu. The chosen participants will be expected to submit completed paper drafts by Feb. 13, 2014, and to participate in the entirety of the conference. im

The AALS Section on International Law invites papers for its program at the AALS 2014 Annual Meeting in New York, New York. The topic of the program and call for papers is International Law-Making and the United Nations. “This panel will explore contemporary developments, processes and controversies in international law-making by the United Nations. The presenter chosen through this call for papers will join several high-level United Nations legal experts who bring deep experience from a number of UN bodies.”

Eligible faculty members are invited to submit manuscripts or detailed abstracts dealing with any aspect of the foregoing topic. Detailed abstracts should be comprehensive enough to allow the committee to meaningfully evaluate the aims and likely content of papers proposed. Papers may be accepted for publication but must not be published prior to the Annual Meeting.

Deadline: September 10, 2013. Submit papers to international[@]vermontlaw.edu. The subject of the email should read: “Submission for AALS Section on International Law.” The initial review of the papers and abstracts will be blind, and will be conducted by members of the section’s executive committee. The AALS Section on Comparative Law invites Calls for Papers for its Works-in-Progress Program in Comparative Law at the AALS 2014 Annual Meeting in New York, New York.

This program will bring together junior and senior comparative law scholars for a lively discussion of the junior scholars’ works-in-progress. Junior comparative law scholars will submit papers they expect to submit in the summer 2013 law review submission cycle to our call for papers. After they briefly present their papers, senior comparative law scholars will provide oral comments and critiques. This new program presents an opportunity to hear cutting edge comparative law scholarship by recent members of the academy.

Pace Law Review will host a one-day symposium entitled Social Justice and Social Media on March 28, 2014 on the Pace Law School campus in White Plains, NY.

The Symposium will address themes concerning the interplay between social media and the administration of justice; both civil and criminal. The Pace Law Review invites short (10+) page papers or inclusion in its Summer 2014 Symposium Edition. The committee will consider a broad range of topics. Selected participants will be invited to present their papers at the symposium. Travel expenses to White Plains (30 minutes outside NYC), including hotel, transportation and meals will be provided.

Deadline: Oct. 1, 2013. Submit a 250-300 word abstract suitable for a 15 minute presentation, which can serve as the basis of a 10+ page paper (including footnotes). Longer papers are welcomed. CONFERENCE DETAILS: The PIUG Biotechnology Conference focuses on best practices for patent information professionals who specialize in biotechnology search and analysis. This year's theme is: "Staying on the Cutting Edge of Biotechnology Patent Searching".

Biotechnology and the research categorized as such, continues to evolve to include many diverse inventive areas. The products created from biotechnological research include antibodies and other biologic drugs, molecular diagnostics, biochips, medical devices, amongst others, and the biosequence and text-based information in this area is voluminous and complex.

Acquiring and maintaining the skills necessary for efficient search and delivery of strategic IP information is a challenge to patent information professionals.

TOPICS: We are interested in:
- Presentations on aspects of science or patent law that are helpful for biotech patent searchers to know, as well as search tools and techniques.
- Presentations by biotech patent searchers or their managers, clients or vendors about helpful training, education, mentoring or apprenticeship experiences. It is recognized that the type of one's institution such as pharma or biotech companies, research institutions, or patent offices, as well as the size of the institution, may impact one's perspective on this.
- Participants for a panel discussion of experienced biotechnology patent searchers to share how they learned their trade.
- Also, as always, we would be interested in presentations about a specific search scenario, with strategy, databases used, results identified etc.

The theme is meant to inspire but not limit topic selection - all topics related to biotechnology patent information research will be considered.

Program at the Law School and our Lab - LETACI - of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil is promoting the "II International Seminar on Institutional Theory: Constitutional Courts and Social Reality", during November 6-8, 2013, and it will discuss subjects on institutional and constitutional theories both in United States and Brazil concerning the Supreme Court and the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF), such as judicial activism, judicial supremacy and constitutionalism history.

The Center for Law, Economics & Finance (C-LEAF) at The George Washington University Law School is pleased to announce its fourth annual Junior Faculty Business and Financial Law Workshop and Junior Faculty Scholarship Prizes. The Workshop and Prizes are sponsored by Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP. The Workshop will be held on February 7-8, 2014 at GW Law School in Washington, DC.

OVERVIEW: The Workshop supports and recognizes the work of young legal scholars in accounting, banking, bankruptcy, corporations, economics, finance and securities, while promoting interaction among them and selected senior faculty and practitioners. By providing a forum for the exchange of creative ideas in these areas, C-LEAF also aims to encourage new and innovative scholarship.

Approximately ten papers will be chosen from those submitted for presentation at the Workshop pursuant to this Call for Papers. At the Workshop, one or more senior scholars and practitioners will comment on each paper, followed by a general discussion of each paper among all participants. The Workshop audience will include invited young scholars, faculty from GW's Law School and Business School, faculty from other institutions, practitioners, and invited guests.

At the conclusion of the Workshop, three papers will be selected to receive Junior Faculty Scholarship Prizes of $3,000, $2,000, and $1,000, respectively. All prize winners will be invited to become Fellows of C-LEAF, C-LEAF makes no publication commitment, but chosen papers will be featured on its website as part of the C-LEAF Working Paper series.

Junior scholars who have not yet received tenure, but have held a full-time academic appointment for less than seven years as of the submission date, are cordially invited to submit summaries or drafts of their papers. Although published work is not eligible for submission, submissions may include work that has been accepted for publication. C-LEAF will cover hotel and meal expenses of all selected presenters.
