Call for Papers Corporate Governance Symposium
March 19, 2014, John L Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics, University of Delaware The John L Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance and the Finance Department of the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics at the University of Delaware will host a Corporate Governance Symposium on March 19, 2014. The focus of the Symposium will be on "Critical Issues for Boards and Institutional Investors in 2014." The Symposium will feature up to four academic papers on corporate governance and a panel discussion featuring speakers from the Delaware judiciary and the academic, business and legal communities. The John L. Weinberg Corporate Governance Best Paper Award will be presented during the symposium luncheon. Additionally, all travel and lodging expenses will be reimbursed for the presenting authors and discussants. TOPICS: We encourage submission of unpublished papers addressing topics within the field of corporate governance that are of critical importance in 2014 for boards of directors and institutional investors with a focus on: board and committee composition and structure, board and/or management succession planning, dual role of the CEO/Chairman, the board's role in monitoring risk, executive and director compensation, shareholder engagement, the role and regulatory issues relating to the proxy advisory industry, and corporate governance reform measures associated with the foregoing. Faculty from both business and law schools are encouraged to submit their research. Finally, we welcome everyone to attend the conference whether or not you are a program participant. PAPER SUBMISSION PROCEDURE: Please submit papers in a PDF version no later than November 25, 2013. Please use the following format as the file name when you save your paper: Last name (all caps), underscore, shortened name of paper, period, pdf (e.g., DOE_Shareholder Engagement.pdf). CALL FOR PAPERS: Symposium The Global Medicine Challenge: The Fine Line Between Incentivizing Innovation and Protecting Human Rights
Call for Abstracts: We are proud to announce that the annual symposium sponsored by the Whittier Law Review, entitled The Global Medicine Challenge: The Fine Line Between Incentivizing Innovation and Protecting Human Rights, will be held November 8, 2013 at Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa, California. This symposium is offered jointly with Whittier Law School’s Center for Intellectual Property Law and Center for International & Comparative Law. We invite you to submit abstracts (of 500 words or less) on themes related to the symposium topic. Areas of particular interest may include domestic and/or international law and policy surrounding patenting of medical devices and pharmaceutical products; access to medicine; protection and appropriation of indigenous remedies; medicine and human rights; and other related topics. Please submit abstracts electronically to wlrsubmissions@law.whittier.edu no later than September 23, 2013. Selected presentations will be notified by October 3, 2013. Please provide a curriculum vitae and a cover letter along with an abstract submission. Travel assistance funds will be available for participants without institutional support. Call for Papers: 2014 Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance: Networks in Global Governance
Call for Papers: 2014 Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance: Networks in Global Governance IBEI (Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals) and ESADEgeo (ESADE Business School’s Center for Global Economy and Geopolitics) are organizing the second edition of the Barcelona Workshop on Global Governance, an international workshop to discuss the institutional design of global governance, on 9 & 10 January 2014. The workshop will focus on networks in global governance. The aim is to examine the potential and limitations of network approaches, as well as the challenges that networked governance at the global level can pose in terms of effectiveness, accountability and democracy. Confirmed keynote speakers include Deborah Avant (University of Denver), Miles E. Kahler (University of California San Diego) and Magnus Thor Torfasson (Harvard Business School) as well as Narcís Serra (former Spanish Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister) and Javier Solana (former NATO Secretary General and EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy). The deadline for abstract submissions is earlier this year: September 13, 2013 CONFERENCE DETAILS: The PIUG Biotechnology Conference focuses on best practices for patent information professionals who specialize in biotechnology search and analysis. This year's theme is: "Staying on the Cutting Edge of Biotechnology Patent Searching". Biotechnology and the research categorized as such, continues to evolve to include many diverse inventive areas. The products created from biotechnological research include antibodies and other biologic drugs, molecular diagnostics, biochips, medical devices, amongst others, and the biosequence and text-based information in this area is voluminous and complex. Acquiring and maintaining the skills necessary for efficient search and delivery of strategic IP information is a challenge to patent information professionals. TOPICS: We are interested in: - Presentations on aspects of science or patent law that are helpful for biotech patent searchers to know, as well as search tools and techniques. - Presentations by biotech patent searchers or their managers, clients or vendors about helpful training, education, mentoring or apprenticeship experiences. It is recognized that the type of one's institution such as pharma or biotech companies, research institutions, or patent offices, as well as the size of the institution, may impact one's perspective on this. - Participants for a panel discussion of experienced biotechnology patent searchers to share how they learned their trade. - Also, as always, we would be interested in presentations about a specific search scenario, with strategy, databases used, results identified etc. The theme is meant to inspire but not limit topic selection - all topics related to biotechnology patent information research will be considered. International Seminar on Institutional Theory: Constitutional Courts and Political Reality
November 6-8, 2013, Rio de Janeiro - Brazil Our M.Sc. Program at the Law School and our Lab - LETACI - of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil is promoting the "II International Seminar on Institutional Theory: Constitutional Courts and Social Reality", during November 6-8, 2013, and it will discuss subjects on institutional and constitutional theories both in United States and Brazil concerning the Supreme Court and the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF), such as judicial activism, judicial supremacy and constitutionalism history. The seminar is sponsored by CNPq (Brazilian Research Council), Faperj (State of Rio de Janeiro Research Foundation) and UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro).
