International Outreach

  • Trade and Investment Initiatives: As a continuation of the Rusk Center's efforts to serve as a resource to the state of Georgia for promoting international trade and investment, Director C. Donald Johnson, a former Ambassador in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, joined Commissioner Craig Lessor of the Georgia Department of Economic Development and other Georgia political and business leaders on a weeklong mission to China in August 2006. The mission's goals were threefold: to establish an economic development and trade office in Beijing, to assist and represent Georgia businesses in China, to urge government officials to open a Chinese consulate in Atlanta, and to add support for a bid by Delta Airlines to provide a direct flight from Atlanta to Shanghai. The following year, Ambassador Johnson met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to discuss the president's trade policy agenda. In 2008, he met with President George W. Bush and his senior trade officials at the White House to consult with them on pending bilateral free trade agreements. In 2010, Johnson spoke at a forum on U.S.-China relations during the Zhijiang International Peace Conference in Hunan Province, China.
