Advice for Faculty and Staff on backing up critical files

Everyone has heard the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  We all have mission critical files that if they were destroyed, our worklife would be devastated.  By taking these few extra steps you can recover from a hardware failure much more quickly and painlessly.
  • Save your critical data files to the g: drive.  The g: drive is backed up each night.
  • If you rely heavily upon bookmarks or favorites, periodically export your list of booksmarks or favorites and save the file to the g: drive.
To export Netscape bookmarks:
             1.  Within Netscape click Bookmarks and "Manage Bookmarks..." or CTRL+B.
             2.  Within the Bookmark manager click Tools and Export
             3.  Select the g: drive.  Create a new folder named backup and save your booksmarks backup file there.

To export I.E. favorites:
             1. Within Internet Explorer click File and "Import and Export...".
             2. Within the Import and Export window click Next.
             3. Click "Export Favorites" and click Next.
             4. Select the folder wish to backup, if you wish to backup all favorites, leave the Favorites folder highlighted and click Next.
             5. Select the g: drive.  Create a new folder named backup and save your favorites backup file there.
             6. Click Finish.
  • If you rely heavily upon your email address books, periodically export your email address books  and save the file to the g: drive.
To export your email address book from Netscape:
  1. On the menu bar, click Window; scroll down and click Address book.
  2. Select a specific address book from the left side of the screen to be backed up.
  3. On the Address Book menu bar, click Tools, scroll down and click Export. You will see the Export Address Book window.
  4. Select the g: drive.  Create a new folder named backup and save your address books backup file there.
  5. To backup additional address books, return to step 2 above.
  • Store essential ugamail messages on the ugamail server rather than your local hard drive.
