Wireless Network - FAQ

What is a wireless network?
A wireless network allows those without access to wired network ports access to online resources such as the Internet as well as the campus network. It does so using the 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network standard which allows communication between a device such as a laptop or PDA and a wireless access point connected to the campus network.

What constitutes acceptable use of the wireless network?
See the UGA Policies on Use of Computers on the University Network at http://www.uga.edu/compsec/use.html. Although you may be on your laptop you are still using the University network. This means that you are bound by the acceptable use guidelines mentioned in the above link.

What do I need to access the wireless network?
In order to access the wireless network you must be a registered student with the University of Georgia and you must purchase a wireless network card for your laptop or PDA if you do not already have one. The wireless network card must be compatible with the 802.11a/b/g wireless standards. That specification should be noted on the box of the card you wish to purchase. Any wireless card that supports the 802.11a/b/g protocols should work fine. If you already have a card and you are not sure of its compatibility we recommend that you contact the manufacturer to confirm that it is compatible.

Where is the wireless network available?
There is currently wireless service in the following locations:

  • All Law School classrooms
  • Law Library
  • Law Library Annex
  • The bridge connecting the Law Library and Law Library Annex
  • Law School student lounge (the one with the TV)
  • Law School Mailroom
  • Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom
  • Law School Dean's Office
  • Rusk Center
  • Rusk Hall Boardroom
  • Rusk Hall Classroom K
  • Rusk Hall Fourth Floor Conference Room
  • Outside on Herty Field (a joint effort w/EITS)
  • As well as many other UGA locations
Keep in mind that these locations are simply where the wireless access points are located and that the signal may travel beyond those immediate areas.

What brand of wireless card do I need to access the wireless network?
Any wireless card capable of supporting the 802.11a/b/g wireless protocols will work with the wireless network.

How do I configure my wireless card to use the wireless network?
Most wireless cards will automatically detect the "PAWS" wireless network. If your card must be set manually you should set your SSID to "PAWS". If you are having trouble accessing the network, you can call or visit our help desk in the Law Library Annex(706-542-0895) or contact the UGA help desk directly(706-542-3106)

How do I access the wireless network once my wireless card has been configured properly?
In order to access the wireless network you must have a current UGA MyID. When you open an Internet browser program such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, the browser will be redirected to a login page where you must enter a valid MyID username and password before you will be allowed to continue. Once you have logged in successfully you will have access to online resources as you normally would.

How do I print to library computer lab printers from my laptop?

Wireless printing will require the download and installation of a small program, Novell's iPrint client. (This option is available only for Windows and is not supported for any Macintosh operating system.)

  • Open Internet Explorer (other browsers may not work properly with this installation, though you should be able to print from any browser later) and go to http://student.law.uga.edu/ipp.
  • Click OK to proceed with the installation. (If installation does not start automatically, click "Install iPrint Client" in the upper right corner of the page.)
  • Click OK to save the file "nipp.exe" and choose a location.
  • Double-click "nipp.exe" to install.
  • Click "Next", etc. to accept the default values, and "Finish" to restart your computer.
  • After rebooting, go back to http://student.law.uga.edu/ipp and click the name of the printer you'd like to install.
  • Click OK and the install will proceed automatically.
  • Print jobs are sent to the printer and held at a release station. Swipe your UGA Card and select the print job. The title of the page and your user name on your computer will be listed. Black and white prints are $.05 and color prints are $.25.

What type of security does the wireless network use?
A MyID username and password is required by anyone wishing to access the wireless network. Once the wireless device has booted and a browser has been opened, the user will be prompted for this information in order to proceed. As of now, the UGA wireless standard does not call for the use of 128-bit encryption. This means that any data sent over unencrypted web pages may be intercepted by malicious users.
