Selection for off site storage

Six thousand linear feet of external storage space is currently set aside in the repository for Law Library use.  Moving material into this space has helped us ensure easier access to material in current demand by releasing sufficient shelf space in the Law Library for a much needed re-organization and re-spacing of materials, particularly in the American Law (KF) sections.
Items currently in storage are:

 Duplicate copy of  reporters (regionals, and federal)
 Duplicate copy of Statutes at Large (through 1997)
 Duplicate copy of American Digest series (through 7th)
 Selected non-law items published before 1976
 Existing duplicate copies of basement KF items
 Selected duplicate or older secondary state materials

When a permanent storage facility is completed, another wave of removal is anticipated.  In this move, library shelves will be cleared of virtually all duplicate and seldom-used material.  In the selection, consideration will be given to such factors as:
  • Demand – the degree to which use over a defined period suggests that demand no longer justifies local retention in single or multiple copies;
  • Relevance – the extent to which titles in certain subject areas may have become redundant as a result of changing teaching or research priorities;
  • Availability – the ease with which items may (or may not) be readily obtained in original or alternative (electronic) formats if subsequently required;
  • Currency – the degree to which texts or factual content may have been superseded by new editions or more up-to-date information;
  • Physical condition – the extent to which physical damage may prevent further use;
  • Value – the extent to which account should be taken of monetary factors, including the original cost of purchase and potential replacement cost;

  • Special conditions – the degree to which, for instance, consideration needs to be given to special collections whose individual parts attract low use but which together add up to a valuable resource, or to standard works without which subject coverage would be incomplete
