Item Record Creation & Barcoding  for Serials Periodical Materials during Serials Check-in

Guidelines for Item Creation & Barcoding

Serials/periodical materials selected for Item creation and barcoding at point of Serials Check-in are:

  • located in the Law Library
  • not incorporated into another item immediately (such as a binder)
  • eventually bound or retained for longer than 2 years
  • has room for a barcode AND can physically support a RFID tag without damaging the material
Some materials are hard to categorize and exceptions may need to be made occasionally.  If there is a question concerning whether or not to create an Item Record and to barcode serials/periodical materials, please consult with the Serials Associate or the Acquisitions/Serials Librarian.
 

Materials Needing Item Creation & Barcoding

The following serials/periodical materials, at point of Serials Check-in, need to have Item Records created and to be barcoded:

  • Law Reviews/Journals
  • Periodical Journals (bound/retained longer than 2 years)
Create Item Records and barcode for any materials that fit the above Guidelines and are officially housed in the Law Library, even materials that are temporarily routed to faculty members.
 

Materials NOT Needing Item Creation & Barcoding

The following serials/periodical materials, at point of Serials Check-in, DO NOT need to have Item Records created nor do they need to be barcoded:

  • Law Reviews/Journals/Serials/Periodical materials officially housed OUTSIDE the Library, including materials permanently located in Faculty Offices, Cheeley Room, Rusk, Legal Aid, etc.
  • Advance Sheets, for West's reporters, individual states' codes/reporters, Shepard's, foreign law reporters, etc.
  • Magazines, Newspapers, and Newsletters (retained for less than 2 years or replaced with microform)
  • Newsletters with frequency of Daily, Weekly, Biweekly, Monthly, Quarterly, or Irregular (bound/retained longer than 2 years)
  • Bar Journals (replaced with microform)
  • BNA Current Reports
  • Filing
  • Pocket Parts
