Library Carrels and Stacking

Carrels
The Law Library has many carrels available for study by students.  The Library has adopted a policy that, except as allowed under the Stacking policy, carrels may not be reserved as personal study spaces by individual students.  This means that any library materials or personal items that are left in carrels or on library study tables  will be removed to the Lost and Found.

Stacking
"Stacking" refers to the practice of leaving library materials on tables for ongoing use by a student for a specific project.  Stacking can be authorized under one of three situations:

1) The Journals and Moot Court have been assigned stacking locations at the index tables on the main floor of  the library.  This privilege allows their members to check out to those locations for three week periods,  renewable, selected items necessary for the official business of the organizations.   Any stacked material may be recalled for use by other law students.  Only organization members who have been authorized by their governing  boards may invoke this privilege.  Any questions a member might have can be directed to either the Circulation  Desk, or the appropriate contact person on the organization.

2) Individuals who have exigent circumstances, such as a required writing project (excluding 1L Research &  Writing projects) may also request a carrel assignment on the balcony.  Requests should be filed  Monday-Friday.  These are assigned for a period of three weeks, with one renewal possible.  This assignment is  made only for stacked library materials, and is not an assignment of personal study space other than the need to stack library materials.

No materials on the main floor of the library (e.g., reporters, bound periodicals) may be stacked, nor can looseleafs be stacked.  No personal items can be left in a stack.  Other library materials that have been checked out to the student, and not the stacking location, may not be left in the stack.  No stack can include more than thirty (30) items.

To request a stacking location, please come to the Circulation desk with the materials needing to be
stacked to complete a Stacking Location Request Form.

3) Any law student may leave materials on a table for 3 days (nonrenewable) without prior permission or without officially circulating the materials to the "stack."  No stacks can be on the main floor of the library.  No materials shelved on the main floor of the library may be stacked; nor can looseleafs.  No stack can include more than thirty (30) items.  No item circulated to the individual should be left in a stack.

To take advantage of this privilege, the student must leave a dated note on the stack, clearly identifying it as a stack.  This permission will be void in its entirety if the stack contains illegitimate items, or is in an illegal stacking location.  If the student has any questions, they should be brought to the Circulation Desk for clarification.

Stacks falling within the universal three-day rule cannot be renewed for additional three day periods.  Any attempt to circumvent the terms of the privilege will result in its revocation.
