Former Deputy AG Larry Thompson to join UGA School of Law faculty

Larry D. Thompson, former deputy attorney general for the United States Department of Justice, will be joining Georgia Law this fall as the John A. Sibley Professor in Corporate and Business Law. Thompson, who recently announced his retirement from PepsiCo, will be teaching courses in the areas of corporate law and white collar crime.


Second-year law student wins environmental law writing competition

Congratulations to second-year law student William R. Gignilliat for being named the winner of the 2011 Hogan/Smoger Access to Justice Essay Contest, a national competition that encourages law students to investigate and offer solutions to environmental injustices. Gignilliat's winning paper, titled "The Gulf Oil Spill: OPA, State Law, and Maritime Preemption," will be published in the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law.

Cleveland Distinguished Chair of Legal Ethics and Professionalism Lonnie T. Brown Jr. was named a Senior Teaching Fellow for the 2011-12 academic year by UGA's Center for Teaching and Learning. Only eight senior level professors are chosen from within the university each year for this honor.


Third-year law student earns top honors in national writing competition

Congratulations to third-year law student Brendan H. White for placing third in the Louis Jackson National Student Writing Competition in Employment and Labor Law. His paper was titled "Discrimination v. Retaliation: What Level of Harm is Necessary to Establish a Cause of Action Under Title VII?"
