Atlanta attorney to discuss USA Patriot Act at Athens-Clarke County Library

Forty-five days after the Sept. 11 attacks, Congress swiftly passed the USA Patriot Act (Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism).

This law gives the government greater latitude and secrecy in counterterrorism investigations and includes a provision that allows the FBI to secretly require records from Internet providers and other businesses – including public libraries – without a court order.

On Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m., the Athens-Clarke County Library will host Attorney Gerry Weber (J.D.’89) of the ACLU of Georgia (Atlanta office). Weber will discuss how the USA Patriot Act has impacted civil liberties.

“The US Patriot Act: How Private Is Your Privacy?” program is one of the library’s events for Banned Books Week.
