Welcome!

Carol Watson, Director of the Law Library

Welcome new 1Ls and welcome back to all our law students! The Law Library staff is always excited at this time of year to meet the incoming 1Ls as well as to hear about the summer adventures of the 2Ls and 3Ls. We hope your summer has been as busy, productive and exciting as ours.

We have been busy planning events and acquiring resources to make your upcoming year as successful as possible. We are excited about introducing you to e-books, new online legal research resources, and mobile apps as well as continuing our regular Lunch-n-Learn series.

Don’t forget:  Reference Librarians are available to assist you Monday-Thursday, 9am – 6 pm; Friday, 9 am – 5 pm; and Sunday, 2 pm – 6 pm. You can also reach the reference librarians:

by phone - (706) 542-6591
by e-mail – lawref@uga.edu

AND…you can get nearly anything you want at the Circulation Desk. In addition to reserve books, we have chargers for every kind of electronic device, headphones, ear plugs, tape, paper clips, calculators, umbrellas, book stands, and even a couple of iPads with keyboards.  If you need something, don’t hesitate to ask.

Whether you are a new 1L or a returning 2L/3L, we hope you will make the Law Library the heart of your intellectual life during the upcoming academic year. All of us look forward to seeing familiar faces and making new friends.

Meet Szilvia Somodi

Please help us welcome Szilvia Somodi, our new morning Circulation Assistant, to the Law Library. Szilvia has lived in Athens for 7 years but is from Szeged, Hungary,  which is exactly 8,265 kilometers (5, 136 miles) from here. She holds a masters degree in Teaching English as a Second Language as well as a Bachelors in Winemaking, a degree she used to help her father run the family winemaking business.

She met her husband Doug, a native of Athens, while they both taught English at The American Language School in Szeged. The couple eventually moved back to Athens where they now live with their four dogs and four cats, all of whom are rescues. In her spare time, Szilvia enjoys watching the Gym Dogs as well as football (a.k.a. soccer).

We hope you will stop by the Circulation Desk and wish Szilvia “Jo Reggelt”.

New GAVEL Video Tutorials

Based on comments in the spring student survey, the library staff created five brief video tutorials to give 24-7 on-demand guidance for using GAVEL, the Law Library's catalog. Whether you have searched in GAVEL once for a title on course reserve or dozens of times while cite checking, you can get new tips for finding the materials you need.

Among the content in this video tutorial series you will find discussions and explanations of the most popular types of searches, suggestions of which search feature is best for which types of material, advanced searching techniques, overview of GAVEL & Beyond search tool, and directions for finding items on course reserve.

Tutorials are also accessible under the help options in the GAVEL header.

Restrooms Now Designated Unisex

As part of a university-wide initiative, single-stall restrooms in the Law Library are now designated unisex. Look for the sign on the doors of the restrooms located on the Main Floor and on Annex 3.

Please note that the restrooms on Annex 2 remain gender-specific.

Law Dawg of the Month: Doctor Underfoot

This month's Law Dawg is Doctor Underfoot, a sweet and opportunistic cat first found as a skinny stray on the sidewalk in front of the Law Library, where he was scooped up by Law Library Director Carol Watson. The Doctor now lives in the lap of luxury with I.T. Help Desk Manager Brad Grove.

All members of the Law School Community (students, faculty and staff) are invited to submit a photo for possible selection as the Law Dawg. The featured entry for each issue will be selected at random from all entries received. Please note that honorary Law Dawgs (i.e. those of the feline, equine, porcine, avian, etc. persuasion) are eligible as well. Please send your Law Dawg photo(s) to aburnett@uga.edu.
