Biographical Information

Joseph L. “Joe” Lester joined the University of Georgia School of Law in 2022. He will teach the class Criminal Procedure and assist with the school’s award-winning advocacy program. Notably, he helped a recent School of Law graduate win the 2022 Top Gun XIII National Mock Trial Competition. 

Lester comes to Athens from the American University Washington College of Law, where he was the associate director of advocacy programs for two years. Under his leadership, American University won three regional titles, over 20 individual awards and was ranked #3 in the nation for Trial Advocacy by U.S. News & World Report

Previously he served as a professor and the director of advocacy programs at the Faulkner University Thomas Goode Jones School of Law for 20 years. His teaching portfolio included classes in evidence, trial advocacy, criminal procedure, gaming law and legal writing.

Lester’s scholarship includes the book Alabama Practice Series: Alabama Evidence and articles published in the Northern Kentucky Law Review, St. Thomas Law Review, Gaming Law Review, Akron Law Review, Cumberland Law Review and Federal Sentencing Reporter.

Lester earned his bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and his law degree from the University of Kentucky.
