Clinics and externships are an essential component of legal education, as the University of Georgia School of Law has recognized for more than 50 years. Our clinical faculty include national leaders in legal education and clinical-model advocacy, all of whom are deeply committed to both highest-standard lawyering and engaged mentoring.

The 11 in-house clinics and 7 externship programs currently offered allow students to deeply engage with real-world clients, cases and communities, with a particular focus on providing representation to legally-underserved individuals. Law students in the clinics work alongside experienced faculty and supervising attorneys, develop sophisticated lawyering skills, engage in collaboration and reflection, and grapple with the ethical and practical realities of service to clients and to the public. Through clinic seminars and one-on-one supervision, students develop practice habits that foster good judgment, careful practice, and commitment to access-to-justice principles throughout their careers.

The clinics and externships also provide an invaluable service throughout Georgia and beyond. Working together, the School of Law's faculty, staff and students provide legal services for the indigent, for survivors of violence, for criminal defendants and the prosecution, and for immigrants. They provide important help to judges in state and federal trial and appellate courts. They resolve disputes as mediators, create new businesses for entrepreneurs, and plan for the use of water in key Georgia watersheds. They work on deals and compliance alongside inhouse counsel, craft policy at federal agencies, and litigate to uphold constitutional rights.

In addition to teaching transferable lawyering skills, these courses create invaluable networking and career development opportunities, and the wide range of practice opportunities facilitate more informed and confident career choices.

The School of Law's clinics and externships embody the law school's commitment to producing the next generation of leaders in Georgia and the nation. Please explore the diverse array of courses currently available.
