The Fund and the Chair have been created in order to honor Professor Chaffin by enhancing the training in fiduciary law provided by the University of Georgia School of Law. The purpose of the Fund is to perpetuate the name of Professor Chaffin as a standard of excellence in the instruction, scholarly research, and practice of fiduciary law by supporting the work of an outstanding professor of law in the areas of wills and trusts, administration of decedent's estates and trusts, federal estate and gift taxation, estate planning, future interests, or other related areas of fiduciary or probate law.

The appointee to the Chair will be known and identified as the holder of the Verner F. Chaffin Chair of Fiduciary Law and shall be engaged in teaching, research, public service, or a combination of such duties consistent with the purpose of the Chair. The holder of the Chair shall have an outstanding national reputation and shall be ranked among the foremost authorities and scholars in the United States in the area of fiduciary law
