UGA update 6:04 p.m. on 2/1

As previously indicated, all classes and operations at the University of Georgia will resume on a regular schedule on Monday, February 2, 2026.

UGA Police have been monitoring road conditions in and around Athens. While no major issues that would impact Monday’s operations have been reported, drivers are encouraged to use caution and allow more time for travel. We realize that some members of our campus community may face unique challenges for travel depending upon their location. The flexibility of supervisors and instructors would be greatly appreciated.

As we resume regular operations following this second weekend of winter storms, we express our sincere gratitude to the dedicated staff members who worked around the clock to keep our campus community safe, maintain essential operations and prepare campus for our return.

UGA update 6:54 p.m. on 1/31

In light of improving weather and road conditions, all non-essential operations at the University of Georgia will resume at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 1. This means the University Libraries (Main Library, Science Library and Miller Learning Center) - including the law library - plus the Tate Student Center and Ramsey Center for Student Activities will all reopen at 1 p.m.

Similarly, the 30th anniversary celebration of the Performing Arts Center and concert featuring Yo-Yo Ma are scheduled to continue, as is UGA Athletics’ gymnastics meet. For more information on these specific events, please check the relevant websites and social media, as well as emergency.uga.edu or UGA’s social media accounts, including UGA’s X (@universityofga), for updates and other safety information.

Bolton Dining Commons and the Village Summit will open for service at 9:30 a.m. Campus Transit plans to resume service on its regular operating schedule at noon.

The delayed start will provide campus operations teams with additional time to address any remaining hazards. However, we urge caution while driving or walking around campus tomorrow, as some patchy spots of ice might be present.

Even with the delay, we realize that some members of our campus community may face unique challenges for travel depending upon their location. Employees are encouraged to contact their supervisors to discuss arrangements in these circumstances. Those traveling to campus should do so only when they believe conditions are safe for travel.

Essential personnel—employees who have been identified by their department or unit as critical to the maintenance and operations of the University, particularly providing essential support to students—are expected to report to work as scheduled unless conditions prevent safe travel. Essential personnel should contact their supervisors for additional information.

Faculty, staff and students at UGA’s extended campuses should follow local directions specific to their locations.

The University of Georgia is planning to operate on a normal schedule on Monday, February 2.

School of Law update 11:04 a.m. on 1/31

As you may be aware, the University of Georgia is closing operations early on Saturday, Jan. 31, due to the onset of heavy snowfall and the potential for worsening road conditions. We will share updates on the university’s status for Monday late Sunday afternoon.

This means School of Law buildings will be closed.

This includes the law library.

Whom should I contact if I have questions? Students experiencing an emergency situation should reach out to Director Tickles. Employees should contact their direct supervisors, most of whom are on the School of Law’s Crisis Response Group.

Most importantly, please remain weather aware and be careful. Make sure your devices are charged and stay in touch with your friends and family. We look forward to reopening soon, but for now, our focus is on ensuring the safety of our community.

UGA update 7:00 a.m. on 1/31/26

Due to the potential for hazardous road conditions, the University of Georgia will open with modified operations on Saturday, January 31.

Bus service was suspended at 1:00 a.m. last night. Transportation & Parking Services will continuously assess road conditions throughout the day and will resume service when road conditions permit.

Dining halls will open at 8:30 a.m.

All non-essential operations in the Tate Student CenterRamsey Student Center, and UGA libraries (The Main Library, the McBay Science Library and the Miller Learning Center) - including the Law Library - will open at 11:00 a.m.

Essential personnel—employees who have been identified by their department or unit as critical to the maintenance and operations of the University, particularly providing essential support to students—are expected to report to work unless conditions prevent safe travel. Essential personnel should contact their supervisors for additional information.

We will share updates on the university’s status for subsequent days in future messages.

Fans planning to attend today’s UGA men’s basketball game at Stegeman Coliseum or the UGA Swimming and Diving Meet at the Ramsey Center should be aware that Governor Kemp is encouraging those in north and east Georgia to stay off the roads whenever possible Saturday. With the National Weather Service currently forecasting extreme impacts for the Athens area from heavy snow between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., travel to and from Stegeman Coliseum and the Ramsey Center may be hazardous. Depending on deteriorating conditions, UGA may need to close roads around campus for safety, so please plan accordingly. The basketball game is scheduled to be televised on the SEC Network at 1 pm.

School of Law update 4:38 p.m. on 1/30/26

As a follow up to the university’s latest UPDATE TO THE CAMPUS COMMUNITY AS OF 2 PM, FRIDAY, JAN. 30, please note that while the Alexander Campbell King Law Library is currently planning to remain open over the weekend, services and hours have the potential to be affected by weather and road conditions.

Any students experiencing an emergency situation during the anticipated weather event should reach out to Director Tickles.

Please be careful over the coming days. Make sure your devices are charged, stay in touch with your friends and family, and stay safe!

Additional reminders:

  • Your primary source for emergency news and information relating to the University of Georgia can be found on official UGA channels, including ArchNews (check your uga.edu email account), emergency.uga.edu and UGA’s X (@universityofga).
  • As information emerges from official UGA communications, the law school will update its own news page and social media platforms based on that information.
  • As necessary, the law school will send separate emails to students, staff and faculty regarding law-school-specific impacts of any university-wide decisions. We will also utilize ugaLAWalert for texting law-school-specific messaging updates (see next bullet).
  • School of Law faculty, staff and students are invited to sign up for a one-way texting notification system by following these instructions: Text “ugaLAWalert” to 877-804-2955. Please note that you must choose to opt in to this service, and you can opt out at any time. Please remember this texting feature does NOT take the place of our uga.edu email address that serves as the primary form of emergency notification.
  • In summary, the law school generally follows UGA’s lead when it comes to inclement weather and other crises. Please rely on UGA sources first, knowing the law school will supplement those as needed.

UGA Message 2:12 p.m. on 1/30/26

As we reported earlier to the University of Georgia campus community, we are continuing to monitor the potential development of snow and bitter temperatures that could last throughout the weekend.

While the risk of widespread power outages is reduced due to the forecast calling for snow and not freezing ice, the persistence of sub-freezing temperatures could cause pipes to burst and create challenging conditions for travel. We will continue to monitor throughout the weekend and will make a decision regarding Monday classes by late Sunday afternoon.

Faculty members are encouraged to begin preparing now for the possibility that classes might not be in-person for part or all of the day on Monday. In that scenario, faculty are expected to ensure continuity of instruction through alternative means such as online lectures (which may be asynchronous), readings, assignments, or other instructional activities, which are clearly communicated to students. However, because each student’s individual circumstances may vary, including related to power/internet challenges, the flexibility of supervisors and instructors would be greatly appreciated in this situation.

Residence halls will remain open. Campus dining halls and Campus Transit are planning to offer regular weekend service but are likely to modify hours as conditions warrant. Please check here for updates on Saturday and Sunday:

At this point, non-essential facilities such as the Tate Student Center, Ramsey Center for Student Activities, and University Libraries (Main Library, Miller Learning Center and Science Library) - including the Alexander Campbell King Library - also plan to be open for normal hours this weekend but are likely to modify hours as conditions warrant. Any status changes will be posted at the following sites:

There are several sports events on campus this weekend. For more information on UGA Athletic events, please check GeorgiaDogs.com or follow @UGAAthletics on social media.

In addition, the Performing Arts Center has its 30th anniversary gala and Yo-Yo Ma concert scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 1. Please check pac.uga.edu for any change in status of that event.

If the campus is closed or moves to an alternative learning model, only essential personnel—employees who have been identified by their department or unit as critical to the maintenance and operations of the University, particularly providing essential support to students—are expected to report to work unless conditions prevent safe travel.

Please continue to check emergency.uga.edu or UGA’s social media accounts, including UGA’s X (@universityofga), for comprehensive updates and other safety information.

Faculty, staff and students at UGA’s extended campuses should follow local directions specific to their locations.

As we prepare for yet another weekend of wintry weather, please see the information below to help keep you safe:

UGA Message 8:57 a.m. on 1/30/26

The University of Georgia is carefully monitoring the forecast surrounding a potential winter storm expected to bring snow and extreme cold to Athens this weekend, and the safety of the university community is our top priority.

The Office of Emergency Preparedness remains in close contact with local, state and federal agencies regarding potential impacts from the winter storm. While no decisions to alter operations at the Athens campus have currently been made, our office is coordinating with other UGA units to help ensure the safety of our campus. Additional updates to the campus community will be made as warranted.

Any decision to alter operations at extended campuses will be made and communicated by those campus administrators to the appropriate students, faculty and staff.

As a reminder, any announcements regarding UGA’s response, including schedule changes, cancellations and campus closures, will be made through official UGA channels, including ArchNews, emergency.uga.edu and UGA’s X (@universityofga).

Additional resources to help keep yourself safe in inclement weather:

Please continue to follow UGA’s social media accounts, check your UGA email regularly and monitor emergency.uga.edu for updates.

Temporary Deck Rooftop Closures Due to Winter Weather

Due to the potential for another round of ice and snow this weekend, Transportation and Parking Services will be temporarily closing the rooftop levels of select parking decks as a safety precaution.

Ice accumulation on open deck rooftops creates extremely hazardous conditions, including vehicles sliding, limited braking ability, and unsafe driving and walking conditions. Closing rooftop levels helps protect both vehicles and individuals during severe winter weather.

Rooftop parking will be closed beginning Friday evening in the following decks:

  • E04- East Campus Deck
  • E05- East Campus Village (ECV)
  • E20- Performing Arts Center Deck
  • E21- Intramural Deck
  • N06- North Deck
  • S11- South Deck
  • S15- Carlton Street Deck
  • W05- Hull Street Deck
  • W09- West Deck
  • W18- West Deck II

If you currently park on the rooftop of one of these decks, please relocate your vehicle to a lower level by Friday at 10:00pm. Rooftop access will remain blocked until conditions improve and it is safe to reopen.

We appreciate your cooperation as we take proactive steps to keep campus parking areas as safe as possible during this weather event. Additional updates will be shared as conditions evolve.

Thank you for your understanding.
