The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF) is the largest provider of pro bono legal services in Greater Atlanta. For over 40 years, AVLF has promoted access to justice by inspiring volunteer attorneys to provide high-quality education, advocacy, and representation at no charge to low-income families with basic civil legal needs at critical times in their lives. AVLF’s programs include services for domestic violence survivors, landlord/tenant disputes, evictions, and unpaid wages. Students will complete tasks or projects from the Safe and Stable Homes Project including the Saturday Lawyer Program, Eviction Defense, Housing Court Assistance Center, and the Access to Counsel PILOT with the City of Atlanta. Tasks will include research, document review to determine merit of cases, some drafting, summarizing laws and creating tools for volunteers, conducting client intake, drafting case assessments, litigation/mediation observation, and clerical work as needed. Tasks or projects from other Safe and Stable Homes Project programs may also be included as needed.
Students must work a minimum of 10 hours per week but should not work more than 15 hours per week. The externship is primarily in person, with the possibility of occasional virtual work.
