Students work with Chief Counsel in the Fulton County Sheriff's Office Legal Department and gain practical experience in government law. Extern responsibilities include: Conducting legal research and assisting with analysis of federal, state, and local law; Reviewing and evaluating agency policies and procedures for legal compliance; Assisting with review of contracts, memoranda of understanding, intergovernmental agreements, vendor contracts, solicitations, and requests for proposals (RFPs); Identifying legal issues, compliance requirements, and potential risks in agency documents and operations’ Assisting with responses to Georgia Open Records Act requests, including reviewing records and researching applicable exemptions; Supporting policy development and legal research related to law enforcement, corrections, and public administration; Observing and assisting with federal consent decree compliance efforts related to the Fulton County Jail, including policy review and tracking compliance obligations; Attending meetings and observing how legal counsel advises agency leadership on operational, financial, and strategic matters, including procurement, solicitations, contract administration, and risk management
