The Office of the Georgia House Minority Leader accepts part-time or full-time externs for the the legislative session from January through early April.
The externship is hands-on and intensive. Students will be assigned to one or more committees and will help Democratic House members by summarizing assigned bills and statutes, drafting talking points and amendments, and performing public policy research involving the bill. For example, a student interested in criminal justice could be assigned to the Judiciary Non-Civil committee, summarize proposed changes to the Armed Robbery statue, identify a way to make the bill stronger, craft an amendment, and discuss the bill and a proposed amendment with Democratic members of that committee prior to the hearing. At the hearing, the student will be available to the members for any real-time questions and strategic assistance. Other committee assignments may involve housing, technology, education, or other policy spaces.
