The School of Law created the Sports Law Program to provide students with greatly expanded opportunities to study the rapidly growing and evolving legal landscape of the sports industry.

The Sports Law Program offers practice-based courses as well as experiential learning through participation in externships and on the school's Negotiation Advocacy Team. Students have the opportunity, both in and out of the classroom, to learn from active sports-industry professionals and to practice essential skills such as contract analysis and drafting, negotiation and critical thinking.

  • Externships

Externships provide essential hands-on learning opportunities in the sports industry. Through the law school's Corporate Counsel Externship Juris Doctor law students can explore sports law from the perspective of counsel in professional sports and NCAA athletic departments. UGA Law students have the opportunity for externships with the Atlanta Braves, the University of Georgia Athletic Association, the Georgia Institute of Technology Athletics and Georgia Southern University Athletics, among others.

  • Negotiation & Transactional Competitions

The School of Law's Negotiation Advocacy Team, which boasts national championships, allows select second- and third-year Juris Doctor students to vie against teams from other respected law schools across the country to hone their negotiation, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The Negotiation Advocacy Team has participated in sports-related negotiation competitions across the country, including those hosted by Tulane University and Villanova University.

  • Sports and Entertainment Law Society

The Sports & Entertainment Law Society (SELS) is a student-run organization with a mission to create opportunities for all UGA Law J.D., LL.M. and M.S.L. students who may be interested in pursuing a career in the sports and entertainment law industries. The group strives to expose students to these industries via conferences, round-table discussions and various networking events.
