UGA School of Law to host conference on the future of space governance
Experts to examine the international legal framework developed more than 50 years ago

Athens, Ga. - The University of Georgia School of Law's Dean Rusk International Law Center and the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law will host a day-long conference titled "The Future of Space Governance" on Monday, October 28. The conference will be held at the School of Law on UGA's North Campus. The event is open to the public, but attendees are requested to register.

Fifty years after the first moonwalk, the prospect for a new set of multilateral agreements governing outer space is remote, yet the legal questions raised by new space activity are mounting, according to School of Law Hosch Associate Professor Melissa J. Durkee, who serves as the faculty adviser to the Georgia Journal of International and Comparative Law. "With little prospect of new multilateral treaties, outer space governance will need to make do with existing law, generate customary rules to govern new applications and develop forms of sublegal understanding and cooperation," she said.

The conference will "take a stakeholder approach to emerging questions of outer space governance," Dean Rusk International Law Center Director Kathleen A. Doty said. "It will feature experts from academia, private practice and the armed forces on issues raised by new space-faring nations, commercial actors in space and threats of space militarization."

The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Emerita Joanne Irene Gabrynowicz of the University of Mississippi School of Law. Gabrynowicz has taught space law since 1987, and she currently serves as a director of the International Institute of Space Law.

Registration for the conference is available at /gjiclfall2019. Attendance for UGA faculty, staff and students is free.

Conference cosponsors are the American Society of International Law and School of Law student organizations the International Law Society and the Military Law Society.
