John L. Douglas currently serves as the senior advisor to the CEO of TIAA, having served as chief legal officer from 2018 through 2025. He has a portfolio of strategic projects including various joint ventures, expansionary activities and consortia arrangements. Prior to joining TIAA, he was head of the bank regulatory practice at Davis Polk & Wardwell in both the New York and Washington, D.C., offices and served as general counsel of the FDIC during the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s.
He earned his bachelor's degree cum laude from Davidson College and his Juris Doctor magna cum laude from UGA, where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif and served as a notes editor for the Georgia Law Review.
