Trinity Health Georgia, Inc. d/b/a St. Mary’s Health Care System is a not-for-profit Catholic health care provider whose mission is to be a compassionate healing presence in the communities we serve.  It is a member of Trinity Health, a large national catholic health care system in the United States Trinity Health has a legal team nationwide of approximately 87 attorneys and paralegals. In 2022, Trinity Health Georgia, Inc. was created which became the parent company to all of the St., Mary’s hospital and other related entities.

Founded in 1906 and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Mary’s Health Care System is built on a foundation of values that include reverence, commitment to those experiencing poverty, safety, justice, stewardship and integrity. St. Mary’s focuses on neurosciences, cardiac care, orthopedics, general medicine/general surgery, women’s and children’s health, and gastroenterology. The system includes 196-bed St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens and 25-bed St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greene County as well as a 56-bed hospital in Lavonia, GA. It also owns a large multi specialty medical group with physician practices located around Athens, Lavonia and Greensboro. Services include emergency care, intensive care, home health care/hospice services, wound care, infusion, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, assisted living, Alzheimer’s/dementia care, preventive care, state-of-the art diagnostic and therapeutic care. St. Mary’s has earned numerous awards, including the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for advanced primary stroke care, advanced inpatient diabetes, heart failure care, knee replacement surgery and spine surgery.

Type of work:

Student will gain practical knowledge of state and federal licensing laws for health care providers as well as fraud and abuse laws, which are necessary to draft and review contracts and advise on commercial transactions.  Student will work with St. Mary’s General Counsel and have the opportunity to interact with some of the other attorneys located throughout the Trinity Health System.

  • Background check and drug screen.
  • Externship will be in person at least one of the days. 12 hour minimum per week required.
  • Full time applications accepted during Summer.

Prior coursework or other skills/interests:

We are looking for students who are interested in health care law and business transactions.  Health care related experience is preferred but not essential.
